WA Strikes Gold

Western Australia has come home from the open-age Jim Brown National Championship with gold medals. In a nail biting final against New South Wales, our WA boys played the perfect game and skated into the history books with a 2-1 win.

It has been more than 25 years since any WA team has won gold in a national championship, and this one tastes especially sweet for some of the older players who have represented our State in multiple age groups over the years.

Highlights included a ballsy last minute of regulation move by Andrew Cox to beat a NSW defencemen and set up Dave Ruck for the championship winning goal.

While the top line was tasked with scoring more goals than the opposition, the second line played an effective defensive trap game to keep the opposition scoreless.

Throughout the tournament excellent passing and offensive rushes by the WA defence overwhelmed the opposition. Many WA players pitched in with goals to dispatch Victoria 11-0 on the first day and set the scene for an impressive 4-1 record going into the final.

Congratulations to all the guys, coach and manager – and a special congrats to the award winners on an awesome effort:

  • Dave Ruck: Top point scorer
  • Jordon Kyros: Team MVP

Final ranking for the championship for the six contending teams was: Western Australia, New South Wales City, South Australia, Queensland, Victoria, and New South Wales Country.

WA Hosts Tange and Secures Bronze

This year Western Australia hosted the Tange National Championship for the under 17 year age group. The Cockburn Ice Arena saw teams from five States and the ACT converge and battle it out on the ice for top honours. A valiant effort saw the host team secure a Bronze medal after giving up a close game to Victoria 1-0.

Congratulations to the players for a great effort!

WA Ginsberg team wins Bronze

Congratulations to our Ginsberg team who have come back from the Under 13 year age group National championship with a Bronze medal. After the round robin the teams are ranked in the following order: - IHV, IHNSW, IHQ, IHWA, ASCTIHA and IHSA.

A close shave against Queensland saw WA victorious and move into a semi-final clash with Victoria. Unfortunately Victoria was too strong a team; after WA carried the play in the first period Victoria notched 4 goals in quick succession and took control of the game.

Well done to Jake Ruck who has finished amongst the top point scorers for the tournament.

Stay tuned for the Coach’s report.
